I just purchased a used 1999 F-150 SC and after about a week it has developed a squeaking noise in the right front wheel area. It makes the noise when I go ver bumps, basically anytime the front suspension travels. Applying brakes and putting into 4WD does not change the sound at all. I sprayed all the moving bushing parts and still no change. Could it be a bad shock or what??????
Whenever I have had a bad shock, it doesnt squeak, it clunks. None of your bushings have deteriorated from age? Have you checked your wheel bearing? Have you checked for slop in your front end?
Besides what wheelMA1 said you could also have a shot ball joint. They can make quite a noise when you go over bumps. Can you get it to do it with the truck sitting there if you push up and down on the front end? If so you can maybe find the noise by listening and feeling underneath when someone bounces on it. Sometimes it's easier to bounce up and down by lifting on the end of the door when it's open.
They arent too hard to change buy you'll need a ball joint press. Apparently some parts stores will rent them to you. Check around.
Is your truck a 4x4?
No it is a 4X2 I have one side off the ground right now. they look ok boot not torn, and I do not get a lot of play. Have to put a shock on the other side and see how those look. 40 k mile ago I put on new shocks from the local autoparts store this time I am putting on a set of Bilsteins, aalways had good luck with those. To me the old shocks don't look bad. I am wondering would it be a good idea to grease the b-joints with a needle attachment. I sounds like thsdarn joint when hitting a small bump
To check the balljoints you have to "unload" them first by jacking up the front of the truck with the jack under the lower control arm. Then grab onto the top and bottom of the tire and try pushing and pulling on it to see if there is any play.
Some guys seem to have good luck with greasing them with a needle, others dont. I guess it cant hurt to try.
That is what I did, think I will leave them be just got to the second shock and it is tosted. should be finished soon and will post the results from the test drive. thanks Dave
Thanks for all the replies, I dont think it is a ball joint, I jacked the truck and no play in the joints, I think the noise is coming from one of the lower arm bushings.
