Personally, I bought a diesel because they last longer and have better resale value. I wanted a f250, but I got my F350 for a steal. Yes, it needed a lot of parts, but, if I had just bought Auto store parts it would have cost me 500$ I ended up putting about 1000 into it in parts, but I bought all heavy duty aftermarket parts. Anyhow, you just have to buy something between what you want and what you need. A 5.4 V8 or 6.8 sounds like it would fit the bill nicely, you could get a much newer Super Duty. I paid 10k for my 7.3 with 146k miles in mint condition, but like I said, it did need some parts. You just have to look around. You can get a nice 2006-2007 F250 with a 5.4 or a 6.8 and 50k miles for 20k.
