03 v10 4x4 will not work in the auto lock, but will if you lock hubs. also will take a long time for the light(4x4) to go out. have only put it in 4x4 3times since 04. on has 72k miles. any clue? thanks
Get some 3/16" rubber line(fuel hose, vacuum hose will do) and replace the lines following your front brake lines on each side. Those are your hub vacuum lines. Will take all of 3 minutes per side and see if that corrects your problem. Forgot how much you'll need but it shouldn't be over 3 feet per side.

My X ended up in the ditch next to my parents driveway Christmas morning last year and those 2 vac lines were the culprit. 4X4 light was on but the front hubs didn't lock in.

I leave mine locked at the hub all winter. I like the stock hubs but you can't always depend on them to be automatic.
I've said it once and I'll say it again, "Throw the PoS ESOF hubs away, put in MM or Warn Hubs and enjoy the rest of our life." Yeah you can clean and regrease them, replace the vacuum lines, put a vacuum gauge on the system, pull the hubs off and replace "THE" O'ring, blah, blah, blah.
I wasted hours and hours dicking with mine before I wised up and spent $100 on MM. Read the hundreds of posts on this site and then then think about how many thousands of hours have been wasted "trouble shooting" that system. And trouble shooting is probably the wrong term given how many things go wrong and leave them not working the next time you need them.
Now I just rotate to LOCK and I won't end up like Bobalonius did (I only got stuck several times before I figured it out).

coudlnt of said it any better myself.. its not that hard to jump out of ur EX to lock the hubs. i got MM in my EX and love em.
Once you get the issue fixed, make sure to exercise the hubs and 4wd on a regular schedule. Be it monthly, quarterly or each oil change. Run the system in a straight line or dry roads or on wet, rainy roads to avoid binding in the system while exercising it.
The long delay in dropping out of 4wd could be from the lubricant on the transfer case engagement motor and actuator getting old and gummed up by not using it frequently enough.
