n ever seen one like that, but i have a external electric oil pump on my 88. it is set for 3 minutes run after shut off, and also turns on while the glow plugs run to build oil pressure.
i think that is part of the reason the truck now has 493,000 miles on it.
I think the need to idle a truck out to let it cool down has decreased with improvements in oil technology. I still let mine get down to at most 400°, usually 350° before I shut 'er down though.
I vaguely remember reading somewhere that the OBS turbos don't get hot enough, at least stock anyway, to require anything like this. Mods are another story. Besides, I'm not gonna hop out of the truck with just the parking brake holding it in place; I'd just as soon sit in it and idle it for 30 seconds or so.
If you do a lot of heavy hauling on the freeway and like to pull off at a rest stop to use the facilities, it can be helpful since you're going from a full load situation to shut off in less than a minute. Otherwise just let it idle down some and you should be fine. Like Rick said, it's designed for the heavy use stuff that runs hard while in use and then is ready to shut down immediately.
I think they are a waste of money. Are you really in that big of a hurry that you can't wait they 2-3 minutes (if that) for the EGT temps to get below 400 F?
I've made it a habit that I will sit in the truck after I park it anywhere and let it run for a couple minutes. Usually it's around 300* by the time I shut it down.
