consider yourself lucky to be able to purchase a excursion, they are good stuff, you will have to fight off the hordes of hot chicks wanting rides with you after you get one, heck i cant go no where without at least 3 girls wanting to ride with me.

Nice X. I know ball joints and tranny are concerns... Not familiar with the V-10 but it's a strong motor. How are the tires wearing? Does it wander at all on the highway? Any clunks or sounds when going over bumps? Does the tranny shift well? any history on fluid changes? If the tranny checks out and it has been maintained it looks good.
I bought my 2000 X Ltd 4x2 V10 with 32k miles on it last February. Even with those low miles, here's what I had to spend to bring it up to "true X-ness":
> new Michelin tires ($1,100)
> new Hellwig rear SB ($325)
> Roadmaster Active Suspension ($350)
> all new fluids: trans, coolant, power steering, brake, and oil of course ($400)
Now that my truck just turned 50k, the front ball joints have gone and need replacing. ($900)
I also need to upgrade the factory trans cooler to the 6.0 version. ($450)
Haven't replaced body mounts (yet), or any COPDs. V10 is pretty much maxed out right out of the factory, and its essentially bulletproof. Trans? Not so sure.
You might consider buying an X from a fanatic like one of us -- who's already done all this work. Save's you time and aggravation. Just a thought!
My experience is similar to LittleRadio. My 2000 7.3 with 108K miles required tires, ball joints, shocks, and pretty soon brakes. You buy a 12 year old vehicle plan on budgeting a few $K for restoration. If you don't, you will not be happy.
It is right inline with some prices I've seen but personally I would spend a little more to find one with less miles or newer or both. For example, there is a 2002 XLT (leather) V10 with 82k on it for $9955 around here. All depends on your budget though. If that's what you have to spend then it could be a good deal. I'm currently looking myself...
It looks typical of the many trucks I looked at. All day long you can find one for around 8K. Of course the key is condition, but as others have said you can figure on some cash outlay to bring it up to snuff. If it checks out, why not. Looks like a nice truck from little pictures.
Thanks all. I'm going to keep looking. I would really much rather have a 2003 or so just been having trouble finding them and this seemed like a good price. Not in a huge hurry so I'm going to take my time.
Why 03 specifically? The interior updates happened in 02, the frontend is not expensive to upgrade to 05 looks and I can't think of anything else different from 02-03 minus that frontend and the EB started in 03. I do agree on wanting on 02-up though. I've pretty much stopped looking at 00-01s in my search.
An 02 would be fine. I just meant that I wanted something newer than a 2000. I liked the price on that one but didn't want one that old. I'm in the Louisville, KY area and finding them around here is difficult
