Installing weatherstripping

What are the do's and don'ts about installing weatherstripping. Since I've got the inside of my panel painted I would like to start putting things together. The first order of business is getting the doors back on to make some room in my shop. I don't want to mess things up. I bought the rubber from Midfifty and thier instructions tell you where to start. I've bought the 3M adhesive which is contact to contact. Do I do a small section at a time? The metal strip at the bottom of the door does that get pinched to help hold the rubber?

I'm not familiar with the mid-fifties, but I do know that the 3M adhesive really likes temp's in the 70's at least to flash off. I hope your garage is well heated?

you have to do a small section at a time, else the adhesive will dry too much.

I did about a foot or so at a time..

make sure u have the black adhesive.. you WILL have little tendrils, and they look really bad in yellow near the black rubber.

I did a test fit with painters tape first.. to see where the trouble spots would be. (door hinge and wire loom)

Thanks Sam, I'm about to go out and start. Hoping to get the doors back on today.

also, after you do the test fit, you can see how much uncovered door u have on the inside lip. I put painters tape down to cover the paint where it would show to help prevent extra adhesive from slopping over.. and it did..

but if the doors aren't mounted.. its a little less/more crazy..

I prefer to use the door as the final clamp, so they need to be mounted before starting the adhesive, else u have to wait a day for it to set up.

Did my doors one shot all around with 3M black adhesive.
No probs with the install.
Problem was the weatherstrip was too thick in spots to allow the door to adjust properly.
Had to shave it to get good door fit.
Wish I had bought thin weather strip which is available.

Having installed the door strip with the doors on the truck, I'd recommend that you install the weatherstrip while the doors are off of the truck.

That's the way I'm doing it. I told my time and got one door done and it turned out fairly good. If I hadn't been side tracked I may have finished the second door before I went in for dinner. I'll get back to it tomorrow morning and hopefully get the doors back on the truck.

Little tip....don't use masking tape to hold the glued w/strip in place. It will peel the rubber off when you remove it. I sometimes use clothes pins or mini spring clamps to hold it in place.
