In September I bought a 1951 F1 for my 14 year old son and I to fix up over the next couple of years. Here is where we are: Engine and tranny are out. Engine is in overhaul at a local machine shop and almost done. Got new oil pan, new valve covers and new intake. Getting the block painted midnight metallic blue. Old tranny is going away. I bought a trashed Mustang T5 tranny and having that rebuilt locally. Bought a new MII front end with power steering and a used 9" ford rear end. Paying Pete Macey at the local Old Ford Store to weld in the cross members for that in the next few weeks. Before I can give it to Pete though, I still need to take the cab off (took the bed off a couple of weeks ago). The cab is stripped nearly bare and we are down to just the 6 or so bolts to the frame and we will be ready to lift it off. Once that is done and the welding of the cross members, I will take the frame and some other small parts (hood hinges, running boards, heater box, radiator saddle) in for blasting and powder coating. The body will go in for blasting and paint. Then my son and I will begin reassembly from the frame up.
Hey Tyler,
Sounds like a man with a plan - I second the choice of a nice Manual Transmission. I went the automatic AOD route so my wife & daughters could possibly drive the truck - took 3 tries to get an AOD installed right - manual is a better way to go. Let your son make it pretty - good call.
Once it's pretty you get paranoid instead of just driving it & using it.
Good move on keeping the original frame. Check it for straightness after you blast it but before you install the Mustang11. 1/8" to 3/16" is fine. Tell your engine guy what trans. and let him install the correct flywheel/clutch and bell housing. If it were me I would plumb the brakes and install the exhaust before putting the body back on. In relation to body work costs, you are probably money ahead buying a new bed and tailgate. Since you are going manual trans. Joe Harris here in Tucson can probably fix you up with a non tilt column that is splined for the M11 rack. My preference would be a power steering unit. Give me a call any time. Bill P.S. The factory shop manual will help you a bunch on reassembly and dog house alignment.
Its good to see your name pop up, Boy you guys have been busy. Its great what your doing, something special, father son prodject. Pics, pics, pics, we just like to share in the fun. Good job dad, looking forward to seeing it.
