TFI igniton advance issues

Ok so i have an 84 f150 with a 300-6 and it has the TFI distributor i had to replace the distributor b/c the shaft broke on the original so i set up the new dist. fired it up and set the initial timing to spec plugged the "SPOUT" connector and now... it runs HORRIBLE it spits and chokes and wont get out of its own way so i unplugged the "SPOUT" connector and it runs decent so i jacked up the initial timing and left the spout disconnected so i could drive it to work but it is using more gas and diesels when you shut it off so it cant stay this way i have tried setting the timing in different places but when i plug that spout connector in it goes nuts i tried tracking it with a timing lite and found that when the spout is connected either it retards the timing instead of advancing it or it hops about the timing scale constantly anyone got any ideas

Which port are you connecting the vacuum advance to? Is it going to full vacuum on the manifold or ported vacuum?

It has no vacuum advance it is all electronic and controlled by the ECM it is carbureted (feedback style) and everything else is controlled by the EEC-IV system. I wish it did have a durasparkII and vacuum advance then i could figure it out

How did it run prior to the old dist failing?
Are 100% sure the dist is timed correctly to engine? By that, I mean did you turn it to #1 TDC before dropping the dist in with the dist properly aligned for #1 plug wire?
What about the TFI module. Is it the same module that was in use before, or did it get replaced along with the dist?
The replacement dist, was it a reman or a used unit? Either way, it could be bad, or simply not be compatible with that particular "calibration number" engine/ECU.

It ran great before the old (original) dist. died ,also i am 100% sure that it is timed correctly ,i actually had to replace the harmonic balancer b/c the old one had started to separate and the marks were way off but now everything is where it is supposed to be and it still goes nuts once you connect the spout plug . also the dist. and module were purchased as a reman unit at oreilly auto parts so i guess it could be defective or a 4:45 on friday finish it up job! thanks for the advice

Thanks. I'm working on restoring it to it's former glory but finding a rear door for a crew cab is a trick. That isn't a very good pic. There isn't much rust but there is quite a few dents and it looks like the pillar behind the rear door was cut at one time (probably due to a jackknifed gooseneck) and sealed with some weird silicone/filler.

Anyway, on to your problem. It seems that when you hook up the spout plug it gets way out of timing. I'm not that familiar with TFI but can you pull codes? It may be in limp home mode.

If you plug in the spout you get a code 11 (system pass) unplugged you get a code 18 first then the same code 11. and yes crew cab parts are hard to find except in texas every yard here in fort worth has several most w/good sheetmetal. i also have an 88 model f350 crewcab dually w/a boosted 7.3IDI back in georgia

Get me a number or website to those yards. Maybe I can talk one of them into shipping clear up to Iowa.

I hope someone more knowledgeable than me can help with the TFI problem.

I would return the dist and get another. Keep your old dist, and you can compare it to the new ones. The new one may have something obvious and stupid left out or wrong, and you may spot it by looking at your old one. At least you know the electronics are good in your old one also.
