I was wondering if someone could give me the pros and cons of switching to 5w-40 oil instead of the 15w-40? Just trying to see if it would benefit me at all, let me know if more information may be needed.
Your injectors will last longer.....so will your FICM because of the easier starting in cold weather. I use it ALL the time. Have since 1st oil change after I bought it new.
I use Rotella T6 5w-40. My injectors seem to be quiter than with 15w-40 an I noticed my oil temps went down. I don't have the factory oil cooler, I have a IPR Research oil cooler which has bigger coolant passages. So my oil temps run higher. Oil temp of 217 an coolant temp of 190. Once I changed to the 5w-40 my oil temp went down to the 207 to 210 range.

Why would your oil temps be higher if your oil cooler has larger coolant passages?
Cons
1. Created oil leaks (big problem for me, but to others maybe not a big deal).
2. Injectors would get noisy at ~ 4k miles ( subjectional)
3. Increased cost
I currently have 160k + miles and I have all 8 original injectors and turbo running 99% 15W40 conventional oil
I do not believe (In a 6.0 psd application):
1. Synthetic oil prevents turbo oil coking better than conventional
2. Synthetic oil increases the life of the injectors better than conventional

I need to disagree with both of these statements. Injectors could last longer with a good 15w-40 than with a cheap 5w-40. Also, the benefits to the injectors are only seen in cold temps, and he lives in Georgia. Also, the type of oil you use will have absolutely no impact on FICM life. The FICM sends the same voltage/current to the injectors whether you are running a super light weight oil or a heavy oil, there is no feedback to the FICM to tell it to work easier.
There are very good 15w-40 oils. The only reason I see to switch to a synthetic 5w-40 is if you are having bad cold starts or want to extend you oil change intervals. The latter really isn't an option since the 6.0L will shear all oils (even synthetics) down to a 30w in about 5k miles.
If you don't need to improve your cold starts, save your money and go with a good 15w-40.
Ok this is defnitely good information. i do not have a real need to improve cold starts. I do have some sticky injectors but the Rev-X has helped greatly with that I would say. I do live in Atlanta so it never gets that cold, maybe a 20 degree morning is about the lowest I would see here...

A lot of people are running 15w-40 + Rev-X with better results than a straight 5w-40 with no Rev-X. Another similar additive with great results and cheaper than Rev-X is Archoil AR-9100. Its fairly new in the Powerstroke world, but showing some promising results.
10w-30 is an option that isn't mentioned nearly as often as it should be. I use it year around with excellent results. 141,xxx mi. with 7,500 OCI's, original injectors and I have never experienced stiction. The kicker its about half of the price of a syn.
