Hey folks, New guy with the motorhome again here...I noticed noise (with gas pedal engaged and silent when I let off) and a leak on the rear end... I was planning to replace the synthetic oil and gasket anyway, but was wondering if the diff could be leaking out the front where the U-Joint connects (or anywhere else) hard to tell right now (it is clean)...also, at this preliminary point I'm not sure what the gear ratio is for this diff on my class c 29 foot motorhome...but if the diff is going bad would I better off by replacing or retrofitting with a slightly different ratio? I'll be driving this rig all over, mountains and flatland. Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Sounds like your pinion bearing is going out...you'll need to replace the pinion bearing and differential input seal (or pinion seal). I don't know the ins and outs of trying to torque the pinion nut properly on Fords...so I'm sure someone will chime in with some assistance
there are a number of places that an axle can leak gear oil. Diff cover gasket/seal or rusted out diff cover or improperly fitted fill/level bung or the pinion seal in the diff nose (where the driveshaft attaches) or the left or right hub seals. If the hub seals you may not notice it right away but the brake shoes and drum will be covered in gear oil which will eventually appear as a damp stain on the brake backplate. Apart from worn seals or loose wheel bearings a plugged axle breather can cause the hub seals to leak.
I"ve been out of town so I'll go back out and check all that you mentioned, but as far as I can remember from the other day: there was no oil or damp areas near the wheels or brakes, and the fill/level plug was dry... the diff cover at the base was very oily and you could see the areas in front, above and behind were wet... which is why I was asking about the diff nose as a potential leak and also a source of my noise...Diff Input seal (pinion seal)? Is the pinion bearing in the diff nose where the drive shaft and U-Joints attach?
Oh also, let's just say that the pinion bearing and seal are good...could I get the noise that I described above from just low oil quantity due to leaking diff gasket... so I replace the diff gasket, fill 'er up with fresh synth. 75/140, maybe add the proper friction modifier..? ...you know, trying to think positive. Any thoughts on that scenario?
