TFI conversion project info
i've been running a MSD 6 and a Pertronix Ignitor II for a couple of years now. I ran across the articles on the TFI conversion, and since there's a pick-and-pull nearby, figured I'd give it a shot, just for fun.
So...I removed a MSD 6A ($175), and a Pertronix II ($82). (prices from Jegs.)
I replaced it with a set of points ($5?), and a junkyard TFI module out of a '93 F150 ($25).
I didn't change the coil- its a Pertronix Flamethrower. I also left the plug gap alone.
IT RUNS BETTER.
i couldn't believe it. I was guessing there would be a slight performance hit, which I was willing to take, since I can sell the old setup and use the $$ for other stuff.
It starts much easier, and idles more smoothly. i haven't even dialed the timing in- just to be safe, i backed off the initial by 5 degrees (from 15 down to 10). Went for a test drive- no performance hit.
I'm in shock. Obviously, I have no long-term data to share, but I'll keep a spare module in the glove box, and its easy to change back over to straight points ignition if you have to.
If you've been thinking about this one...try it.
