I used the cheapo Walmart driving lights - I think they were $12 for the pair and that included the relay and the wiring. It's about time to replace them as they are starting to rust - salt air is not the easiest on metal.
Wish there was a way to mount some lights flush in the bumper. I have a set of Navigator backup lights that are rather thin at 2". Well they are thinner yet now after a hunting trip. OUCH! Am gonna try the 5" Hellas below the bumper and try to make a bracket to protect them a bit. If they don't work out, I haven't lost too much $$.

Here is a bracket I fabricated to fit the existing holes on the frame!
i did the lights in stock bumper holes, work pretty good, had to seal them allot since they filled up with water backwards, they were the walmart blazer 4 inch rounds. gonna do something special instead thats in the works for backuplights in the near future.
I originally found it at Northern Tool but now they only carry one without the hook (and it's not the kind you can pull the pin and "spin", it's square tubing).
Maybe e-Trailer or their similar sites.
The pic I found was from me of those web sites for Chinese wholesale companies, but there HAS to be a US manufacturer somewhere.
I believe you should be able to just splice into the factory back up light wiring in the taillights for the on signal. Let me see if I can find a wiring diagram.
I just bought the 05 service manual (that's all they had on ebay at the time) even though I have an 04 Ex. I can find the schematic/wiring diagram, that doesn't mean I fully understand what's it mean and where to look for the wiring at the back of the excursion. Do I take the lense off to splice the wire there or can I go behind the stop lights and find the wiring there?

Thanks,
I got you, didn't fully understand your question. You can access the wiring for the tail lamps from underneath the truck. You do not have to pull the taillight to get to the wiring. This would be of course if you wanted the backup lights to come on every time you put the vehicle in reverse. The other option would be to wire the back up lights to a 2 or 3 pole fused switch to turn on when you want which would probably be the better option. That way they don't come on backing out of a parking space at the mall and such unless you needed the extra light. Hope that helps.
Here is a quick pic. The plug you see is the reverse socket/wiring, but check your manual to be 100%. The big black loom is for the backup sensors.
I'll do just the backup for now, the poles switch I'll wait for my brother whose live 300 miles away to come visit me to do it. He's better at these electrical things. He's only come to Las Vegas a few time a year, and I can't see a thing when backing up now.

When you tie in, make sure you use the hot wire and not the ground. If you use the ground and the bulb burns out in the factory reverse light, the aux light won't work since the bulb breaks the circuit when burnt out.
I ended up tying my backup cam into the harness at the bulb. It was a little more time, but I didn't have the schematic and didn't really want to tear apart the harness and probe to find the right lead. Hardest part was getting the wire through the giant rubber grommet behind the tail light housing. I used a large Phillips screwdriver to 'stretch' out the opening long enough to get the wire through.
The rear lights I have tied to a switch alone. At some point I'll modify the switch to an on-off-on and add some diodes to let me choose to have them come on 'auto' with the reverse signal or 'manual' with the switch or 'off' completely.
