We test drove two 2006 5.4 350 Super Duty's today. How do you know when you turn on the auto tow that it's working? In my 1999 I have now, the RPM increases when I turn it on. We didn't notice any RPM change when turning on/off the auto tow. Also drove a 2006 V10 and with that we saw the RPM change.
Do you mean tow/haul? Your '99 doesn't have a tow/haul mode. All it has is a button that turns off the overdrive gear.
In tow/haul the transmission upshifts at a higher speed than normal. It also downshifts much more aggressively and has engine braking. This is more noticeable with a load.
Yes, you are right, I mean the tow/haul. It's the button you push at the end of the automatic shift handle. Just confused though, why was it obvious when the button was pushed on the V10, and not at all noticable on either of the 5.4liters. The lights came on the dash so it looked like they were both activated. Thanks

If the obvious difference was a change in RPMs then you probably switched to Tow/Haul at a different speed. Tow/Haul changes the speed in which the transmision shifts into OD and it also changes the torque converter lock-up. Could have been either one.
All things being equal, there should be no difference between the V8 or V10.
There will be speed differences between the V8 and V10 when they shift. The torque curves are different so the shift schedules are different. If the trucks have different axle ratios that will change the speeds, too.
