The seller said it ran when it was pulled out, but had been sitting in his back yard for about six months. He attempted to hook it up to a battery, but the positive wire was all chewed up. Lacking hand tools, and daylight, I bought the engine for the whooping sum of thirty bucks.
I won't know until Monday if it turns over or not, but let's take bets. I'm hoping it does, however I think I am fighting an uphill battle with that one. If not, I will donate the seized engine to my votech school or let one of the teacher's scrap it. I won't feel like a lost a whole lot, anyway.
Pull the plugs and squirt some penetrating oil in the cylinders and leave the sparkplugs out. Let it sit for a day or so, and it will probably break free if it turns out it's stuck. If you try this, make sure to leave the plugs out when you try to crank it.
I couldn't wait, so I attempted to get it moving today. I removed five of the six spark plugs (the fourth one from the front is missing the porcelain and wouldn't budge) and sprayed some WD40 down into the cylinders. I added about three quarts of miscellaneous oil I had laying around and let it soak for a bit.
About an hour later, I came back and tried to turn it over. The crank moved about a quarter of a turn and then got caught on the tire the engine was resting on. It moved back easily, too. If I understand correctly, this is a good sign?
I sprayed some more WD40 in the cylinders and threaded the spark plugs back in a turn or two, because I can't do much else without getting it onto a stand.
Here is the possible candidate for the rebuild, if my picture inserting skills work...
