I went to replace my spark plugs and wires (91 explorer XLT).
when i took the wire off of the plug the plug was totally rusted and rotted into the engine. I went to 2 other plugs and the same thing. i gave 2 plugs a little pressure but they wouldn't move and i really didn't want to break any plugs. i put some penetrating oil on the base of the plugs. Don't know if it'll do anyhting or not.
Anyone know what i should do here?
Should i bring it to a shop to have down? They must have a way of doing it right?
Is it worth being done though. I mean the engine does have some pretty bad rot.
my oil dipstick holder totally rotted out and i can't even check my oil level.
I had the same problem on my 92. Mine were in so bad, I ended up rounding one of them off and brake the ceramic off in the process. I thought for sure i was gonna have to pull the head and have it machined out. Then a friend came over and looked at it and was able to pound a metric socket onto the plug and get it freed up. He had a nice set up Snap-On sockets and extensions that made my Craftsmans look like Wal-Mart specials. If you're not comfortable with the fact that you may break off a plug and render your car useless, I would take it to a shop...
I had the same problem with a friends explorer the plugs wouldn't come out so we soked them in penatrating oil and left it for a couple hours then ran it until it was good and hot and the plugs came out with a little bit of pressure.Hope this helps!!
