1986 F150 5.0 won't start
Ok so this truck is a friend's and he replaced the fuel pumps, lines and filter but left it sitting with the intake manifold off. He got a little water in the block. I changed the oil and filter and there was water in the pan but the oil looked ok. I replaced fuel injectors, plugs, wires and all gaskets. His battery was dead when I left and he got it charged and said it tries to crank and then stops. Is this a distributor problem or do I need to manually turn the crank with the plugs out to see if there's water stopping the compression?

"It tries to crank and then stops.." Is this the same as the engine will turn over (= crank) then...<POOF!> Nothing?
At any rate, I would pull the plugs, crank her over to see what comes out the plug holes...and give the plugs a good going over look-see.
Then I would put the plugs back if not boogered up and check for spark.
Get back to us....well. it's been almost 10 days - you probably have it figured out by now....

Compression test is not a necessity at the moment. Just yank the plugs and crank the engine over - by hand. If she turns smoothly, put a teaspoon full of Marvel Mystery Oil in each hole....let her set fer a few beverages or so... turn her over again by hand, watching/listening for that compression "phfffttt."
If you get a good phffftt, put the plugs back in - if they're still good.....the crank her over and look for spark....

I don't know what part of the country (if at all) you're in but I'm in the Eastern Daylight Savings Time.....3 hours ahead of West Coast, 2 ahead of Mountain Time and 1 hour ahead of Central Time.....

Yessuh, checked my email, you're in there....Many, many years ago I had a friend with the same name as you...first & last.....same, same.....how 'bout that?
Pointers? Absolutely....if you need 'em....and thanks again for the compliments.....I hope I can live up to 'em......
Crank the engine over slowly with the MMO in all holes.....not such that you'd fall asleep but not at light speed either. You want the oil to spread around in the cylinders, catching the walls and rings. If there's any rust on the cylinder walls, the MMO will provide somewhat of a buffer when you crank her over with the starter......
I'll send you my phone number in a return email directly......call me tomorrow when/if you have problems. I don't walk fast these days so be patient with me......hahaha
