I read an article in Diesel Power Magazine, it is almost a necessity to take out transmission to change the uppipes on a 95.
Since I finally got my truck running (remember the longest thread in history?) and eliminated the CEL I started looking for more trouble.
My drivers side uppipe is leaking where it connects to the exhaust manifold.
It appears I wouldn't even have to take off the turbo, let alone take out the transmission to fix it. Who has done it on a Ca model truck?
If it's leaking on the bottom end (where it connects to the manifold) there is no gasket or o-ring there it's kinda like a flare fitting. 2 bolts with nuts to tighten it. I'd try and tighten the bolts. Careful with the bolts though. one of mine was frozen and broke. If so, ya can replace bolt
i have a ca model and mine was leaking due to rubbing on the firewall (or something else back there. i found it easier just to pull the engine out. im sure there is an easier way but thats just how i did it. the turbo is alot easier to remove with the engine out as well
once the turbo is out the pipes are easy to replace with the tranny and engine still in place just loosen the bolts at the collector with an extension and universal joint socket then the manifold bolts pretty much the whole thing falls apart afterwards
If I remember right the collar for the driverside uppipe will get hung up on the tranny? I spent 3-4 days trying to drum up a way to get them off without much effort. I ended up getting the plasma torch out and cutting the pipe.
I had my turbo off and still could not pull it up through.
Thanks for the replies.
Towrus, I noticed my uppipe has a flat side on it also, where it appears to have been rubbing on something. It doesn't appear to be leaking there though. Should it have a flat side or has it been rubbing on something? If it isn't supposed to be flat I imagine it is getting pretty thin in that area as it is about 6 inches long and nice and flat.
If it is only leaking on the bottom side just try to tighten the bolts and/or replace them if they break. The top side is the hard one to get to. Don't pull engine for this. Worst case tranny is way easier.
Thanks for the replies.

They do have a few spots where they are flattened a bit to clear. I doubt it has rubbed anything from what you described.
I have never tried it but one possible solution to getting the pipe out without pulling the motor would be to jack up the back of the transmission. Remove the rear trans mount and allow the trans to drop down a little to give you more room
Does it make any difference if the truck is a 4x4. It just seems like a piece of cake to get the uppipe out. I can get to the bolts at the manifold quite easy and it is a clear shot up to the collector. Hmmmm!
Then again alot of people said you had to remove the turbo to replace the fuel pump. That wasn't very hard either.
If it were me I would replace the manifold bolts with the hardend bolts and tighten them down good. That is after you install these that don't leak and yes, there is a flat spot:
Yes sir, they are pricey. After removing and putting my turbo back on just to have a up pipe gasket leak put me over the edge, so I bought them. I drove it for six months pulling the camper that way before I got a chance to fix it. A leak there is a power killer, on one hill I was down to 1st gear at 20 mph. That has never happened to me before. One the very worse of mountain grades I'll be down to 36-38 mph in 2nd gear with every thing working good. Not to mentioned the smell that I had to HEAR in my right ear from the little women on the other side of the cab!
You can also do this by removing the exhaust manifold. I could not get mine off... Or put it in from the top. Had to remove exhaust manifold, put in from bottom, put manifold back on, tighten all bolts.
