Was just watching a rerun of Six Feet Under on HBO. Each week they had a death to tie into the show. In this episode a man was backing out of his garage and down his steep driveway. He stopped to lean out and pick up his newspaper. It was a long reach from the driver's seat down to the ground, he lost his balance and fell out while the Excursion was still in reverse. The front left tire ran over his chest and killed him. It was very realistic, and I could see how something like this could happen in the blink of an eye!!
It was a gray 2005 XLT with dark blue trim, and sounded as if it had a diesel engine.
Moral of the story..... even if it just saves one life.... put that Excursion in Park before you lean out the door for anything!!!!
It is a very long reach to the ground.
All the more reason to never get out of the excursion.
I had a similar experience in my Expedition. I parked it at the beach house, but somehow left it in drive. I hopped out and started to walk away when my friend screamed "it's still moving!" Quickly I swung open the door and slammed it into park. I felt really embarrassed, but it could have gone badly quickly. It only takes a moment of distraction for something like that to happen.
Not nearly as bad as what could have happened to me when I first started driving and always left my manual transmission equipped car in neutral when parked, even on a steep hill. "Parking brake will hold it" and thank god it never went out. Also, could never decide if I would give it too the daughter on that show if given the chance. I finally decided yes after much soul searching and also because I was in a pretty bad funk at that time...
It was a drama series that takes a darkly comical look at members of a dysfunctional
California family that runs a funeral home. It was a pretty good show.
The You Tube video shows the lucky death scenes of the weekly shows, a new death each week.
That is, uh, seriously funny for a youtube trbute. But I can say I use the parking brake and Park in the auto trans after a few close calls of my own stupidity over the years.

heck AKEX could do that at 100 mph in reverse out his driveway and not die!
Those are all staged and I guess it could go on all day because there are a thousand ways to get killed but it's 90% lack of common sense and 10% bad luck. Anybody that leans that far out of a vehicle on a hill is not too bright to start with. But of course smart people do dumb things sometimes..........................I know.
Right after we got or Exc the wife was dropping the kids off at grandmas for her to watch them for the day. She did not get the lever all the way to park and so it was in reverse. The truck stayed put until they were in the house. When the EBPV cycled and the idle picked up, the truck backed out on it's own! Down the drive, across the street, up the neighbors drive and into the closed garage door with a bang! Grandma asked her why she parked at the neighbors when she looked out the window. Nobody got hurt! I did have to fix a broken garage door for a very understanding lady and scold the wife. No damage to the Ex as the hitch took the hit. We were very lucky as the kids were still small and would have never seen it coming. She had a rabbits foot up her "you know what" that day.
