unobtainable fuse box?

Just talked with the service department about my inop excursion. Guy said the leaking windshield finally did in the fuse box and maybe GEM. The fuse box is a definite loss, he won't know about the GEM until the fuse box is replaced. Problem is, he's saying he can't get a replacement fuse box. Would a box from a superduty work? He's not sure. Next issue: He quoted me $630 for the GEM...just the part. Does that sound high?Excursion is a 2001 limited with V10 gas and 2wd.

IS this part exclusive to the excursion, or could I pull it from another ford truck?

This is the one under the dash that the GEM attaches to.

The original part numbers were:

2000/ YC3Z14A068BB .. Fuse Junction Box-Under Dash

2001/ 1C7Z14A068AA .. Under Dash Relay Junction Box

According to Ford's website, both have been discontinued.

Before spending $630.00 (which may be the usual dealer 'jacked up' price over the actual MSRP), contact FTE sponsor PARTSGUYED.COM, pass along your VIN.

Ed (parts manager of Horizon Ford in Seattle) will give you the correct info, and sell you the part at a discounted price...off the actual MSRP.

Ed has an online parts catalog that is EZ to use and lists the actual MSRP and discounted price.

I'll shoot Ed an email when I get home and have the VIN in front of me. The dealer said total cost for new GEM, fuse box, and resealing the windshield would be around $1200.

I wonder what fuse box they are using since both the discontinued parts do not have replacement part numbers listed, which is odd for a vehicle of this vintage.

The whole deal seems odd. I don't know how they can quote me a price on a part they don't have access to. The GEM cost sounds overly inflated. I'm thinking about having the truck towed back home. I'm sure I can install the fuse box myself once I track one down. The windshield can be resealed by any good glass company. I know a new GEM (if needed) will have to be programmed by the dealer, so I'm stick there.

What most dealers count on is...that most customers have no parts catalogs or access to one, have no clue what the actual MSRP's are.

Since Ed has an EZ to use online parts catalog anyone can access...with the MSRP and discounted prices listed, there is no reason why ppl...especially FTE members, should get "hosed" by stealerships.

The most flagrant example of hosing I've seen here on FTE: A coupla years ago, a member needed a 351W valve cover. the dealer quoted him 350 DOLLARS...for just the part.

I looked the number up, the MSRP was almost 300 dollars LESS! The member wasn't stupid, went to a junkyard, bought one for 20 bucks.

Guy at the ford house out here pulled part numbers, old part number is the same the the part number on the super dutys. He's got an excursion himself and he says he hates when people don't recognize the link between super dutys and excursions. He's said it's not 100% but it's close. I don't know how right he is, but the box he pulled off the floor looks exactly like mine in my truck.

The box also looks very similar to those used on F150's and Expeditions. I'm going by ebay pictures, so the sizes could be off by just a bit.

I picked up the box from the dealer, so I could take it to a JY for comparison. Sure doesn't take much corosion to mess these things up.

I will throw in another recommendation for partsguyed.com. A terrific place to do business.

I got a reply from Ed. Both parts are obsolete - junkyard time. Closest yard I know of that may have what I need is an hour away, this sucks.
