Hi guys I am on the 48-60 site most of the time ,But I need some information on a 84 F150 xlt with a 302 and auto overdrive,I am working on it for a friend.I changed the oil and filter, and added 6 quarts as my motor manual said. This didn't bring the oil up to the safe mark on the dip stick.I sarted it looked for leaks and shut it off to let the oil drain down into the pan,Still low.I have added almost 2 more Quarts and it still is just below the full mark. would there have been a 8 quart oilpan ? the truck has 39,000 miles and very good shape.Nothing looks like it has been changed since new. I don't want to overfill it and blow out seals. Thanks for any help you may give me.
It takes 6 quarts. At some point in it's life, some replaced the dipstick with the wrong one, which is too short. You will have to go to the junk yard to find the right one.
Same for me, the numbers on my dipstick match up but I guess the oil pan is from another application. Here is my thread, I think i'm going to change the oil pan just so i'm "sure":
If you want the easy way out, verify how much oil is supposed to be in it(everyone is saying 6 quarts, I hope they are right). If it is, drain the oil out. If we assume the oil filter uses 1 quart, then put 4 quarts back in the engine, and then run it. Let it sit for awhile to let the oil drain back, check the dipstick, and take a hacksaw and make a mark on it where the oil level is. This will be the "add" mark. Then add 1 more quart, then make another mark, that will be the "full" mark.
