Dont know if anyone else has had a problem but yesterday i found my def tank leaking . Took in to dealer and they called me back to say they would have to replace the tank. Now this is the second time the tank wiil have been replaced . The first one had the heater go and was replaced in sept. Wiil find out tomorrw what was the cause.
I dont thing the heater stays on while the truck is off. I was told that we are not suposed to fil the DEF tank to the top because it freezes. If this is true.......I have no idea but I was told DEF freezes and try to keep the truck inside.
My truck stays in a climate controlled building when I am home so I dont worry about it. Hopefully someone will chime in on that but I would think the DEF is freezing and busting the tank.
Dec freezes at 12 degrees and has a 7% expansion volume. u might be on to something. Google how to keep it from freezing but not filling it to the top to leave room for expansion is a start.

Did Ford tell you to try to keep the truck indoors? That would be impossible for me.
Ford has a special spout for the DEF refills that will not overfill your tank. If you fill your tank to the neck all the time, then your just asking for a busted tank and maybe a repair bill if they catch on to if your overfilling. Not saying you are, but its highly possible.

There is no need to keep the truck inside. Than tank (if filled right) is designed for freezing. The heating element only operates when the truck is on. The EPA will allow a truck to run out of emissions for a period of time while the DEF thaws.
I keep all of my vehicles inside just because I like to. Ford did not tell me to do that.
I am certain it's cold up there and a full tank will cause a break.
The tank was never over filled. The last time i filled it was after they installed the new one in sept. I never had a problem last winter when the truck was left outside in -30 for weeks(not pluged in) while i was in camp.
They found that the pump was leaking so they then replaced the pump , tank and sender/heater assembly. This must come as one unit wonder how much this will cost once the warranty runs out. Hopefully this going to an ongoing problem!!!!!
