Advice: Proper frame cleaning
I am in the process of getting my frame cleaned up now for painting. I have stripped everything off the frame and have pressure washed it, used degreaser on it and also a over cleaner. There's not a spot of oily residue left on the thing.
Right now I'm trying to get the paint and rust off of the frame. I used a 80 grit flap disc on my angle grinder and that gets the paint and rust off great all the way down to shiny metal. I then used a wire cup brush and that work great too and lasted a whole lot longer. The problem with the wire cup brush is the metal has a dull grey finish to it rather than the flap disc which was shiny. Is the dull grey finish part of the paint the wire cup brush is not removing? Do I need to get down to the shiny metal or is the grey dull part sufficient?
Which process is recommended?
Here's what the two sections look like.
it really depends on what you plan to use as a top coat, the wire brush method will leave a residue behind that should be cleaned off before you paint it. bad thing about the flapper wheel is if your not careful you will see all kinds of grind marks once you paint it.
So.... what are you going to top coat with?

Thanks Bill!
I plan on coating with an epoxy primer and then a poly enamel topcoat.
If I go the wire brush route do I wipe the frame off with mineral spirits to clean the oily residue?
Use a wire brush
Clean with harsh dish soap, warm water and a scrub brush
Rinse and let dry/blow dry
Wipe with mineral spirits and then paint.
The dull look from the wire brush is fine. It is a good cleaning, it just isn't shiny.
