1 Wire Alternator Wiring ?'s

Whats up fella's?

I'm installing a Tuff Stuff 140A alternator. Its a 1 wire, internally regulated. Do I need to splice or re route and of the factory wiring on this install? Or just unplug it and hook up the pos to the new alt?

Thanks in advance Stay classy San Diego

I assume you mean a GM style alt. When I did mine, I needed a plug for the alt. and then made about a 12" wire that splices to the plug and runs up to the starter solenoid. You throw away the "Y" shaped wiring harness that goes to the alt, solenoid, and ext regulator.

The only problem I had was that after the conversion, my gauge read funny. Other than that, I was really happy with it.

Ok so the one you spliced in was for the volt meter on the dash?

My alternator has no plug. Just a bolt on the back side which goes to the hot side of the battery.

None of the existing wires need to be grounded or hooked to hot in order for the truck to run?

My actual model was a 12SI. It had a black snap in, two spade plug. One of those wires grounded back to the case and the other spliced into the lead to the starter solenoid (IIRC)

It doesn't sound like what you have, but it does sound like all you need to do is make a heavy gauge wire to go to the solenoid and you are done. Throw all the old wiring out.

This is helpful and might be my problem. The big thick black wire which goes to the cab.

It was the thick wire on the 3 wire connector. Hooked it up to the solenoid and it powered right up.

You just confused me. Do you have a 3G, or a GM 12SI?

Either way, glad you got it working

Bullitt390 and me collaborated on the annotated images. We deduced there wasn't a clear understanding in the Dentside forum (visually) of what went where when doing a one-wire alternator swap so we came up with those pics. 'Glad it helped in sorting out your issue.

Tuff Stuff Performance 7069FBULL - Tuff Stuff Silver Bullet Alternators - Overview - SummitRacing.com

That is the one I have. I'm not sure if it would be a 12si or a 10si. Do they share the same case? I know they are similar atleast.

I think the case is physically the same. The difference, I believe, is that the 10 is a true 1 wire, whereas the 12 is technically a 3 wire hookup.
