In 1997 or 1998 the Army switched from #2 to JP8 (at Ft. Bragg anyway) as their equipment fuel. I clearly remember the filter changes we had to do on everything because the JP8 basically cleaned out the fuel system. When we deployed to Central America for a hurricane we had to burn #2 again and go throught the whole filter change routine when we got back.
There ya go. It makes sense logistics wise to have all equipment running the same fuel
Didn't expect all the replies this quick.. thank you everyone!! My local and very small airport has a couple different fuels one being jp8 but don't kno the price.. my buddy is a light wheeled mechanic in the army and he says all their heavy trucks and tactical vehicles run jp8 all the time. I think im gonna run a 50/50 tank at first then put in a new fuel filter then run a 100%I tank and see if it has any difference on the truck than regular diesel
Im more interested to if the truck runs any different or if it gets better fuel mileage.. im not sure on the cost yet.. my truck is getting tore down in the next couple weeks so it may be a while until I test it but if someone else does test please let me kno
However, the military uses it in ALL diesel powered vehicles, generators, and appliances. It is known to cause trouble in low compression diesel engines (14:1) such as rough idle, hard starts, but our engines shouldnt be affected.
JP8 has been known to cause increased wear on the exhaust valves
Tanks can run on jp8 to gasoline. Just about anything combustible you can put in them.
Tanks run JP8 because todays tanks are run by jet engines. In my time in the air force I've never seen jp8 in heavy equipment other than aircraft support equipment that was built to specifically run on jp8. This is not the first thread on this subject if my memory serves me right.
However I don't see any reason that you couldn't run in it your truck. I would defiantly add two-stoke oil to it though.
Last that I knew jp8 was more expensive than diesel.
Asked my dad about it. Hes curently in the reserves he drives semi trucks. but was deployed in kuwait about 2 years ago. He said they ran both diesel and Jp8 overseas but guys complained about Jp8 would make the humvees overheat faster then diesel. Now i know USA and kuwait have diffrent climates. Just Jp8 may have soemthing to do with it. Not sure if it will effected the overheating factor of our 7.3. Just given some info.
