What he said- it runs just like #2, but if you get caught running "OFF ROAD FUEL ONLY" in an on-road truck, umm, be prepared to shell out $$$$. Good thing is, I've never heard of anyone dipping the tank on a PSD. Most get caught at the pump by Johnny Law grabbing a donut or something hehe.....

Depends on where you live. In GA I've seen some of the feed & seed stores get hit. (Usually the Co-Ops that also sell fuel) If they dip your tank and it comes back red... you'll be forking over green for a LONG time.
At least the guys here know it's fine to run. I've had people argue with me about if it would "hurt" our engines. Funny I'd say, how much is that Track-hoe over there... oh, only 7 TIMES as much as your truck. Hmmm (usually ended there )
the reason i was asking is regular diesel is 15ppm and off-road is 500ppm my buddy has a 99 5.9 cummins he runs if from time to time and when he does run it his truck runs a hell of alot better. and i was not asking about red diesel to run it just cuz its cheaper i was asking more for making my truck run better.

His engine was designed to run on a higher sulfur fuel. Newer trucks are designed to run on lower sulfer fuels. It depends on what year your truck is, if it will help or not. I don't know if it will run better, though. AFAIK, higher sulfer fuels only add to the lubricity of the fuel and help engine life, not power. I could be wrong though. It's happened before.
You can add an additive to your fuel to get the effect of a higher sulfur fuel if you have an older engine. A buddy of mine pours a bottle (of something) in with every tank in his '01 Cummins.

Here in Ontario, they have targeted farm shows and will dip the tank of every diesel pickup with farm plates. They make a killing at over $400.00 for every truck with dyed fuel.
Sounds like it is time to get a locking fuel cap. Here in Iowa I've heard of them dipping diesel pickups at a livestock auction while the owners were inside at the sale.

Interesting Mark, you would think this practice would be illegal, maybe somewhere in the search and siezure or private property laws but what do I know.An owner of the truck must be present senario, interesting.
The only red diesel fuel available in my area since the summer of 2007 has been ULSD. As a tax exempt user, red dyed fuel is all we have used in our diesel fleet since 1985.
I also believe you are more likely to find dyed fuel in a premium grade with a higher cetane rating than you are to find clear fuel that way.
A higher cetane rating could explain a performance increase more easily, IMO than an increase in fuel sulfer.
