Master Cylinder issues?

It's been a while since I've been on here... lots of stuff going on!

Anyways, I was traveling down the interstate a few days ago and I noticed the my cruise kicked off and my parking brake light turned on. I thought that was a little weird as I haven't touched the brakes in the last 100 miles or so. I pulled off the interstate and it appears that I lost any assist to the brakes. The pedal depresses an inch of two and then it's solid.

So I'm guessing the master cylinder went out? What is the process for replacing it? I know they can be somewhat a pain as you have to bleed the cylinder and the brakes.

Any pointers are tips? Thanks in advance.

Brandon

Yep
The VP should pull right at 20 or so, if there are not leaks and the pumps working. Thats at idle.

Also go check out this 1996 Bronco/F-Series Workshop Manual

See the brake & Vacuum section and you should be able to figure it out.

Usually if the vacuum pump is bad enough to affect the brakes then heater control will default to defrost and you won't be able to control air flow.

Although rare for the issue, check out the vacuum manifold where the vacuum pump hose goes to ...

When my Vacuum pump went out I had to stand on the brakes and hope I could get stopped in time. I thought it was the mster cyl as well.

I think someone here told me to pull the Vacuum hose to the brake booster (behind master cylinder) with it running to see if there is vacuum or not.

I did and there was only a small ammount of vacuum; replaced the vacuum pump and everything was back to normal.

I hope this helps.

Sounds like that's my problem. I just pulled the vac gauge out and it's only doing ~5 lbs at idle.

Any tricks to replacing the vac pump? I looked at the diagrams and it doesn't seem too difficult.

You will need a power steering pulley puller, after that I think the ax pump must come out. Then it just swap out. My hardest part was putting the pulley back on the shaft.

Remove belt and the old pump
Use a pully puller/intaller and pull the pully(auto parts store should loan)
Remove the bolts
Just be sure to remember to install the bolts before the new pully is pressed back on.
Press pully on
And put it all back.
10mm wrench

Edit add on
My pc connection must be slow. What Doug said lol
