I need help. I am looking to purchase a 99-02 truck. My ideal truck is a 7.3, 4x4, crew with a 6 spd 250 or single wheel 350. However, those are really scarce and hard to find. How reliable are the automatics? I see plenty of trucks the way I want one equipted except with an automatic. Lots of ads always seem to say new trans, just rebuilt, or new torque converter. I don't want problems. I live on a 2000' mtn. in TN and occasionally will pull loads of 16k. The heavy loads usually involve cattle, fertilizer, or hay. The fertilizer is the only really heavy load that I pull ...up... the mountain. I also have a 27'camper (5th wheel) that I want to pull with it...Rocky Mtns. here I come....What is the scoop on the transmissions. I can handle it. I'm looking for a good "Ford". Right now I drive a 92' Dodge with a 12 valve cummins and a 5spd......Wife wants a better truck cause this one is a typical Dodge....rides like a log truck and is ugly as sin but it can pull like crazy with that Cummins.............HELP!!!!
The trans is the weak point with these trucks..My auto lasted 260000 miles before it started giving up the ghost, but that will very, your best bet would be a BTS or John Woods trans...Brian @ BTS (Brians Truck Shop) gives a lifetime warranty
Had mine rebuilt at 250,000 miles, not due to problems just figured it was about time. From my experience, I don't understand the bad rep for the trans.
