I have a 97 250 4x4 diesel, I believe the problem is the brake power booster, but wanted to get some feed back from fellow members to see if any one else has run across this before.
When I apply the brakes pedal it's soft and goes to the floor with some brake stoppage then if you immediatly hit the pedal again as if pumping the pedal it's hard only goes down an inch and there is no brakes at all,
also you can hear an air noise when you hit the pedal.
Any input is appreciated and thanks in advance for any responses.

with it running in park, put your head under the dash on the drivers side, hit the brake pedel with your hand, if you get a hisssss with the operation of this pedal. i do believe this is a classic booster problem. what your hearing is a ripped diaphram leaking vacuum
Hope this helps
My brake pedal started making a wierd noise; I have a 2000 explorer with the V-8, 5.0L. The brake pads are ceramic and like new. I have bled the brakes, put in new fluid, and just replaced the front brake lines to try to fix this. I still have a weird noise like a Ksssshhh sound if I push the brakes really hard and quick. The pedal does not go all the way to the floor, and it doesn't do this all the time. Anybody have any ideas what else I can try?

Do you have a drop in braking performance while this noise is happening?
Also, is it only when cold, or after warm up? How audible is the noise? I know the last question is hard to describe over the internet, but maybe describe as; its loud enough for my passengers to look at me and say what is that, or its only something you hear...
The sound is loud enough for everyone to hear...it goes "cushhh" if that makes sense? The problem occurs all the time (cold or warmed up). In fact, the noise used to be intermittent, but now is every time & the pedal also gets mushy. And yes, the brake performance is affected (slower to stop the vehicle).
well you posted in the superduty forum, we have diesels, but also gas engines too. if the noise sounds like sucking air then its a brake booster.
with engine at idle trans in park, put you head in the foot well near the pedels and hit the brake with your hand. if you hear the whoosh really loud, its definately the power brake booster.
Good luck,
did every test we could, finally took to shop. Ended up being faulty SENSOR on LEFT FRONT WHEEL. Couldn't have detected it ourselves, they used specialized software.
