I have had vibrations in my 73 F100 ever since I had it. I'm pretty sure its the wheel bearings in the rear end but I'm not sure. I can feel the vibration in the steering wheel but its the whole truck vibrating some...I can feel it with my hand on the seat and seems like I can see the body vibrate some.
I jacked the front end up the other day...no slack in front wheels and they spin nice and smooth with no noise.
I just installed a new passenger side drag ling. Steers great now and doesn't pull left or right.
I changed the center chunk in the rear end with a known good one and saw no difference whatsoever. I changed u-joints more than once also with no change.
With it jacked up I can't feel any slack in wheel bearings or feel any roughness or hear noise. Original bearings I assume and it sat a long time in same spot...might have some rust in em?
I can't think of what else it could be. Should I just get new wheel bearings and see what happens?
Could be the drive shaft out of balance. If it was wheel bearings, while the vibration is going on, turn the wheel to the left and right while driving to see if the vibration goes away, this turning back and forth gets some weight off bearing and if it is a bearing should be less noticable depending on turning direction.
Front bearings have been replaced and it has had two different sets of tires and rims...no change in vibration. Transmission was changed awhile back because the original burned up....still no difference in the vibration.
I'll try that and see what happens...I have replaced the u-joints more than once....my drive shaft doesn't have a carrier bearing.
Unless your talking about the differential carrier bearings? I have changed the whole 3rd member in the rear end and it made no difference.
I don't think I'll be able to do a good road test of anything today...wind is blowing very hard.
Well took it for a drive after wind calmed down some. Got up to 60mph and put it in neautral....still had the vibration. Maybe Walmart just did a crappy job balancing my tires. I'll get them rotated and balanced later on and see what happens.
I have checked converter bolts since I put in the other trans and they are still tight.
Never thought about a bent axle flange....could be a possibility.. I was gonna try gettin the wheels rebalanced and see what happens I guess. I have changed a ton of stuff with no change.
