Rear main seal any tips?
Ok I need to do my rear main seal and I have never done one on an Idi,i just let it leak no biggie.but my boss told me he is tired of seeing my parking spot rainbow colored. I have only done one I'm my life and it was on a buddies jeep several years ago.any advice is appreciated.

You need to pull the trans and flywheel/flexplate. There is a cover on the back of the block that comes off, the seal is in this cover. Pry the old seal out and tap the new one in. Keep in mind the one I put in mine should not be lubed, it is a teflon seal, there is a thin plastic sleeve that comes with the seal, this must be placed over the crank as the seal is slid over so you don't damage the seal. Also check your crank and make sure the new seal doesn't sit in the groove (if there is one) of the old one, or it will start leaking again. If it does just do what I did and tap the seal in a little farther so it sits on a new spot on the crank

Haha you tell him, by the way he is a captain (O-6) in the USCG. Do I need any special tool (s) before I start? I am just guessing but I need to get a transmission pan gasket too, to drain the tranny fluid should I do any gaskets or anything on the transfer case while I have the it out?
And as far as the x-case seals, if they ain't leaking leave them, the 1356 you have is rather easy to change seals in if they ever do start leaking. But make sure the vent isnt plugged and you should be ok.
