so we just replaced the 5.4 in my 99 with another 5.4 out of another 99. both are L vin engines. the replacement is a low mileage out of a 99 navigator. we just unplugged main harness and pulled from navigator then put in motor and plugged main harness in.. easy and straight forward. well now it will not fire. it turns over and over.. the anititheft light is just blinking rapidly... did i miss a stepp some where or is it a simple plug and play? if you need more info, id be glad to answer you.. just really ned help.
Aparrently the PATS is not happy about something.
Turn the key to run and let it set for a few minutes.
Watch the Theift lamp for flash code.
If you see this, report what the code is and I can tell you something about it.
Good luck.
Even though they were both '99s did you examine the harness connectors to make sure they had wires in the same slots? I was planning on using my '02 harness on my '97 and after a quick look realized they weren't going to connect without reconfiguring or just using my stock harness on the new engine.
well in some weird twist of fait, just tried it one last time after walking away for about 2 hours and she fired right up... not sure whybut im not gonna complain. thanks for the quick responses..
If the PATS sees something amiss it can reset it'self a few minutes after a start attempt.
For instance if you were to try to start with the wrong key or the key has no ID chip, it will recognize this and prevent a start.
You come back later with a good key and it will allow starting.
The trick to a harness is the ID code on the harness tag.
The factory has coded the harnesses to be able to tell what options are needed vs the harness, to permit that function.
If a harenss were to be ordered from a dealer, they must know the code on the original harness.
Good luck.
thanks bluegrass thats some really good info.. i guess it must have not recognized the key at first or something. but it starts up everytime now. very relived cuz i was not looking forward to a dealer visit
so apparently the pats system is messing up for some reason. went outside this morn and she wouldnt start again... very irratated...i have the keys and stuff from the navigator and wonder if it makes sense to just change entire pats system from navigator to my truck. what do you think?
Can't be done without reprogramming.
The PATS marries the PCM and Dash as the basis for a number of anti theft features.
I feel your issue it right there in the column as an intermittant condition.
Have you tried to let it offer a code when there is a failure?
If you get a code then you have something specific to look for.
Good luck.
i believe it was a 1:3 code but maybe a 1:4.. it seems that it will recognize it the key from time to time, but other times it wont recognize the key. We changed the pcm on a 99 expedition and didnt have a problem with the pats. guess a trip to the dealer is next.. def dread that.
I am trying to help your but your just discounting everything.
You need the correct code count.
Pay attention to it.
Both 13 and 14 is an issue with the KEY.
Likely the pickup antenna near the switch.
The PATS is working as it should.
If it can't get a good key ID then the PATS has done it's job, it's not at fault..
so its a problem with the key. it started once last night but wont again this morn. so do i go to the dealer for another key? i only got this one key with the truck. i no to get other keys u have to have a working key and i dont think i do. i get 13 code and a 14 code depending on what mood the key is in. i want to keep the pats system, specifically cuz its doing its job. when it allows the truck to start it will do it a few times. i could get a key and wait till it functions properly then program the new key. would this work?
