Need help with overdrive

I have a 2001 f250 4x4 v8 5.4L and the overdrive off light won't go off and it won't turn the overdrive back on when I press the button. When i wiggle the shifter end the light will turn off but immediately come back on.
Thanks

Take the plastic cover off of the steering column. The screws are underneath. Inspect the wires where they enter the shifter handle. They are either worn through or broken. You can either repair the wires or get a new shifter handle from a dealer for $50-$65.

Wow, all three wires were worn clean through. I had just enough wire there to splice them back together n wrap them nice n snug with electrical tape, but what a horrible design.
Thanks once again

I would just buy a new shifter, they will probably break again, but I guess you could wait until it breaks again.

I had to put a new shift lever in my 2000 F250 because the idiot at Tire Kingdom must not have realized you have to put your foot on the brakes to get it out of gear so they broke it, when they forced it.

When I brought it to their attaention they said it was like that when I dropped it off, so I bought new shift lever for I think $68 and spent 10 minutes putting it in.

I never went back to Tire Kingdom again.

So for $68 they lost thousands of dollars worth of tire sales, my truck is pretty heavy and I don't rotate tires like I should and towing a trailer eats up tires, I have 4 tandem axle trailers, 2 trucks and a car, so you can imagine how much money they lost over the past 10 years plus all of the future business they will lose, just because some idiot tire monkey didn't know how to take a truck out of park, and instead of doing the right thing and taking care of it stuck it to me.

I think they lost more than $68, plus I have since found a mom and pop store that truly appreciates my business and I drive past tire kingdom to go to the new place, Weaver Tire in Brandon florida, I think I drive past a couple of tire kingdom stores on my way to weaver.
