BTW, for all my brothers and sisters that have USAA, I have some bad news. USAA just changed their coverages to $5000 for aftermarket equipment. As of December 2012, my policy changed.

I recently had a total loss to my 2003 Mercury Marauder(before the policy change) that was show quality with a documented $18,000 plus in mods and upgrades(not just different stuff, nicer and high performance stuff). I was rear ended by an idiot on his cell phone going 60 miles an hour while I was stopped in traffic. I have 0 at fault accidents since I was a teen(now 40) and have no tickets(knock on wood for both) in 9 or more yeas. USAA tried to pay me $1100 more from their offer for a bone stock car with my miles and condition after I gave them an exhaustive list, pictures, and receipts in my owners scrap book(yes I'm ****). I had to fork out $550 to pay a custom car/auto appraiser that showed them a $6000 difference from their last offer and their appraiser agreed.

Just a warning, most daily drivers are not in the condition of my Marauder that was a near collector car in condition and upgrades. I stated all upgrades and was told they were all covered, but insurance companies are in the business of making money. I JUST finished negotiating this week and the accident was October 29.

I still like USAA but they are no angels, google it.

I presume from the description he caught the guy stealing the stuff out of his truck and when he didn't back down he punched him out.

I get it, but I might have drop-kicked him.

As far as vehicle theft goes, in houston there was a rash of rollback thefts... and theres really nothing you can do to stop that either. frustrating that the police don't care enough to do anything to stop those types of things either.
What's a rollback?

Tow Truck

Disabled cars on the side of Interstates around here are easily snatched by thieves and end up at the metal scrap yards.

Notice how when it IS in a door frame it doesn't budge:
T&T Tinting's 8Mil thick Break-Safe Auto Security Film - YouTube

The standard they measure with is it must last for 120 seconds of continual effort to break it via the glass panel it's been placed on.

There are dozens and dozens of videos illustrating the film "providing material security"...
http://youtu.be/z3g8sa4ciM4

You are gonna lose the glass no matter what...why lose the contents as well (or worse have them trash your interior when they don't find anything)? Or even worse than that, steal the while car?

No, the window is stronger when it's in the frame...the film keeps the shards in place and the frame keeps the window from bending and tearing the film.

I worked as a physical security manager and I've seen this stuff on tempered glass in buildings. Saw a meth head try to break the windows in by throwing chairs, rocks, 20 lb metal garbage cans, etc.

He applied a little more than "a gentle push" to those windows and they didn't budge.

A couple of flaws in your thought process...if nothing is showing, a) why do they break the windows? b) you can't tell the security film is on - how would they know it's on there and to break the windows "just for spite"?

If its some kid just breaking windows, you are gonna lose the window no matter what...why have the glass everywhere and the rig sitting out all night with no window? If they are going to try to break in for real, time is vital...2 minutes of a car alarm gong off and no progress, I doubt they are gonna stick around that long.

any of you guys actually have that stuff on your glass? How much did it cost you? I'd really like to do that... only thing I'd worry about is if I drove my truck into a lake. Sounds like I'd die if my window motors shorted out.

That's my worry...on that one in a million where I need to get out and no-one there to cut the glass from the outside, or where I'm in some accident where the truck is on fire and the good Samaritan can't break the glass to get me out.

I know the 'glass cutters' we have on our rigs can cut through the glass film easily, but that isn't something you can just put on your key ring, they run like 6-8" long folded up.

Ya I realized that later. I think not leaving things showing is the best policy but that won't help with car theft and installed devices; radios etc. Conclusion; that film does sound like a good idea, especially if you live in a high crime area and have aftermarket devices installed.
