Here's my take on the op...

Robert, I think your suggestion to the OP is dead on. The OP can (& should) have the insurance company perform to expected, legal standards.

However, I will qualify my comment with two other observations (just my $0.02, of course). Let me first say, I am not accusing the OP of this but it is not uncommon for posts of this nature to be omitting or otherwise leave out, some small (but critical) bit of information that influences the overall picture. As Robert said, "If all of this is correct..." (sometimes, that's a big "if"). The other comment is, if the OP forces the issue (which, I personally think is probably the right thing to do), they most likely can expect their insurance company to drop them at the next renewal or at a minimum, raise their rates sky high. And all this potential problem has been brought on by some drug crazed thug who is worthless to society.

I would be bailing regardless at the first possible moment even if they did make good. I have never had anything but stellar service from my insurance, USAA, but that is only available to military and a few others who qualify...

Amen to that (I've been with 'em for 37 years or should I say, they've been with me?).

Usually insurance "adjusters" are very careful to replace like brands, like OEM models, etc. - so that's why I can't help but wonder if some little piece of crucial information has been overlooked or is otherwise missing from the posting.

"Fortunately I've got the best insurance company on the planet. Everything is covered including all the aftermarket gear."

I've been with USAA since 1985!

I've been with them since 2001 when I first came in (I was in basic on 9/11) and I pay literally half of what I would pay with any other company in NJ. In NJ, auto insurance is out of control but if you are like me with 0 points, a degree (should not matter but does), and over 25 USAA is really really reasonable. When I tell people what I pay monthly and that it is 3 vehicles with full collision on all of them they usually don't believe me.

why do they break a window when all they have to do is put a screwdriver in the door lock and pry it open and lift the latch .. its much more discrete and less expensive to fix.... i should know it happened to me in a chucky cheeses parking lot and now i dont ever leave anything in my truck

Which, of course, is always the best policy. It's somthing I've "preached" to my son may times: don't even leave a quarter out showing. To a drug user hopped up on meth (or whatever) it takes almost nothing of any value to get your window knocked out. I leave nothing out (at least showing) - no Garmin stuff, no electronic connectors (iPod, MP3, nothing).
I don't even have an NRA sticker showing!

Why leave anything showing?, it's a no brainer. I had my truck broken into because some fender washers were in the cup holder and the idiot took them thinking they were quarters.

I leave stuff out when I am on base but even then it isn't 100%. But yeah I don't leave anything expensive out. Heck, when I rigged in my old ipod to my now sold Cobra, I ran all the wires under the console and had the ipod hookup in the center armrest so it was all hidden and you would not know anything was not stock except the pioneer headunit.

jimmy jammers will prevent this type of theft, but unfortunately unless the thief knows what the sticker is that comes with them, they will probably damage your door skin before they realize it. however; i'd rather have a damaged door skin than a damaged door skin, my radio missing, and all my DVD's gone... esp since I usually have a few thousand in tools in the back of my truck.

Portland Or is notorious for window smashing. I saw about 10 cars in one day one time with smashed out windows. A woman pulled into a scenic waterfall one day with her kids and I made a U-turn shortly after and saw hers smashed out 5 minutes later. (probably for no reason).

Yep, thats the sad part of vehicle security. I used to do car audio installs and everyone was always talking about security, different security systems, etc... but in reality you could spend $2k "theft proofing" your car only to have someone smash the window and they will do a good bit of thieving and damaging before you can get there even if you get the paging alarm. As far as vehicle theft goes, in houston there was a rash of rollback thefts... and theres really nothing you can do to stop that either. frustrating that the police don't care enough to do anything to stop those types of things either.

I saw a video of some 4mm film (clear or tinted) you can have put on. A YouTube video shows a kid taking one of those glass hammers and trying to break in...the film allowed the window to break but kept it from falling apart...he couldn't get in.

I'm a bit unsure about it...in that one-in-a-million scenario where you need to break out the glass to get out, you are stuck. The FD can get in easy with the glass cutting knives we have, but I'm not sure if I'm willing to trade off the 'escapability' for the security.
