It does appear to be showing signs of wear though....checked it the other day and it was at the low end of being in the acceptable range (just over 12volts).

Not sure I'll notice a difference but I'll feel better knowing I have a new upgraded alternator.
I got there wire upgrade for free

But you can make your own and is strongly recomended all it is is another battery cable that goes to the Passenger battery and it does have a fusable link in it Im not shure what the fusable link is rated at but if I was you just throw like a 190amp fuse inline with it. or whatever size alternator you got

Check out my pics theres a few of the wire upgrade and its ran acording to DC Power specs

I have a question about the stock alternator, I am on my way to Atlanta and stopped for the night, did a coolant flush the other day so had the hood up checking things out, put my hand on the the alternator and I couldn't keep my hand on it because it was so hot, is this normal? Batteries are a month old and it's putting out about 13.4 to 13.8 volts going down the road after about 5 hrs of running. Just wondering if I should pick one up just in case of failure.

Thanks

PS this on the 2005 x

That voltage is good. Mine was at 11.4 or so. I wouldn't worry about it. Have a safe trip.

My stock alternator used to get really hot like that
It was so hot it was starting to melt the battery wire terminal at the alternator.
You might want to clean all battery conections and the 2 main battery ground wires that go to engine and the frame.
My stock alternator ran cooler after I did this no more melting at the alternator battery terminal

My DC power alt doesnt get near that hot
