O.k. here is what happened this morning. I was driving down the road and my truck died. It began slowing down and i could mash on the gas and nothing happened. then it died. The water in fuel light was on and off for the last week. Nothing consistent. I replaced the fuel filter on the rail and also the one on the engine. I also bleed the water while under the truck and it had some water and junk in it. i cycled the key a few times till i got fuel up to the top filter and no more air. I then tried to crank it and it would not start. it tries to but will not bust off. the batteries are charged, i have checked the fuel shut off switch and all fuses. I have also checked the oil and filter because of the oil activated injectors. There is nothing anywhere obvious. It is a 2004 f-250 6.0 . never had a bit of trouble. Does anyone have any tips or ideas to try before going to the ford house?
the fuel pump runs and i checked it when i put the top filter in. I cycled the key on with the top filter cap off and watched it fill up with diesel after it blew bubbles for a minute. Then i replaced the cap andleft it a little loose, and cycled the key again until diesel ozzed out the threads then tightened the cap. what do you think about the ficm?
did u torque the fuel filter covers back to spec? also, did u use motorcraft fuel filters? the truck is picky and jus cos it aint grumbling now, dont mean it wont later.
i agree. check for codes. unless u want to take a shortcut, u could use a scanner and also clear out the computer memory. ur car is more than likely still having tat error codes stored inside. since it died as a result of the error codes and the supposed water in fuel light, then it's still gonna tink tat. pull the codes first, then reset it, and see if she'll fire back up again.
however, if the error codes suggest other kinds of probs, then dont do tat reset, and resolve ur other probs first.
Do you have gauges installed or possibly a scan gauge? If not at a minimum I recomend the scan gauge. Those little buggers pay for themselves with all the PIDS that they can monitor. As Mark suggested try unplugging ICP which will set it to a default value and if its a sensor issue then it should start. If not that then you really need to check FICM voltages, and find something that will read ICP and IPR values while crankin This is where Scan Gauge works well. ICP needs to be atleast 500psi to fire the injectors. Good luck.
Today we ran a scan on the codes and only got one code.
p-2285 injector control pressure sensor circuit pressure low.
does anyone have any ideas on where to look to solve that. i am thinking maybe the fuel pump is weak.
we cleared the code and checked again and no codes. then we tried cranking it. it still would not crank. we checked again and still no codes.
so if icp goes bad it will not crank? or could this be leading to a bigger problem? to answer an earlier question, i am ford all the way and wlways use motorcraft products. sometimes they are higher but i believe they are better.
When you say crank I think of the engine simply turning over (whether it fires or not).
The engine should crank regardless of the ICP.
However, you won't even begin to fire if the ICP is less than 500 psig.
Unplug the ICP and see if it starts and runs. It will be underpowered, but it will run with the sensor unplugged. If it starts with the sensor unplugged, then you have a bad sensor. If it doesn't start, then you may actually have a low pressure condition in your high pressure oil (a leak or a bad HPOP).
If the water-in-fuel light continues, then you should remove the HFCM cover plate and clean it out - and if that doesn't fix it, perhaps you will need a new water sensor.
