I am still in the planning stages of my cummins swap. The V10 has me convinced to get everything else I want done on the vehicle and leave the engine and exhaust for last. With 190K+ on the engine and I would assume the transmission I'm wanting to replace it before it goes. Ford-Cummins recommends a 5R110 swap rather than updgrading the stock tranny. They do make a stand alone controller for the tranny.
Has anyone here actually done the swap? I have seen 5R110 + transfer case/converter fairly reasonable. I would just like some outside output from people not possibly selling me a product. Thanks in avance.
the 5R100 trans rocks. although it is a 4 speed as well. The 4th and 5th gears are both overdrives. based on loading, the trans shifts to 4th, or 5th. it doesn't shift through all 5 like a "normal" transmission will
look at how it holds up. I'm pushing well over 600 RWTQ and she's flawless. I've several guys running 800-900 RWTQ and 450-500 RWHP with this trans and they're solid.
if the price is right, and the stand-alone controller isn't to much $$$, I would say it's a no brainer. The 4r100 trans is decent...but it requires a rebuild from a trans master to make it a "good" tranmission. Especially if you plan on bumping up the HP/TQ with that Cummins
I figure I will have to do the swap or a major rebuild/upgrade the stock 4R100 once I get the cummins....I'm thinking for the cost to upgrade the 4R100 I could get the 5R110 swapped in....I'm hopin someone would have experience or knowledge on how hard the swap actually is...Is it basicly a direct swap or would I be doing alot of work to make it fit??/

Four speed? Here are the ratios, you decide:
3.11:1
2.2:1
1.54:1
1.1:1
1:1
0.71:1
I count six ratios. The 1.1:1 and 1:1 are never used together, it uses one or the other. When the trans is colder than 0°F it uses 1.1:1. On certain WOT kickdowns from 0.71:1 it also uses 1.1:1 instead of 1:1.
It is advertised as a five speed because on any given set of ratio changes from a stop there are five ratios used, never six.
It shouldn't be much harder to install than a 4R100. It's a bit bigger, but other than that I don't see it being any harder. The electronics are MUCH harder to make work. I'd be really surprised if they actually have a controller that can make this trans shift correctly. It is MUCH harder to control than a 4R100.
