I guess that this is the only exception that I have to my previously stated position on rattle-can paint...I use the SEM weld-thru primer in the rattle-can on all hidden metal surfaces. Here's a vendors writeup:

"SEM Paints 39783 SEM39783 Weld-Thru Primer
Eliminates corrosion that forms between welded substrates. 39783 has a zinc enriched formula that minimizes the heat zone that is caused during welding, while reducing distortion and welding splatter."

For instance, if I am welding in a patch panel on a cab, fender, etc where I cannot gain access to the back of the panel, I will coat the patch panel with weld-thru primer before I tack it in place. After the repair I will do my best to shoot some paint or undercoating or POR-15 into the void to help seal off the weld bead and any other exposed metal.

so heres a question I have been doing some metal prep on my 55 , trying to get it to where I can get some primer on the cab , and was just wondering can you paint over the old primer and still get a good bond between the different paints ? I have sanded 90% of the inside cab and there are still some spots that dont have rust but still have old primer , these spots are areas that are hard to get to > Does everyone sand it down to bare metalor just spots that hav rust issues? Sorry for posting here but couldnt find anything elsewhere

As long as the old primer has a good bond to the metal then you should be fine.

I'm a big fan of good weld thru primers.....they work great in those hidden areas as CharlieLed says. Just don't try to weld ON the primer, you will have very poor welds. I always grind it off of the weld area. It is designed for the back side of the repair.

Sometimes if I have areas that need primer but are hard to spray, I will mix up some primer and brush it on. Works just fine in areas that you don't see.

Paint gun filter

I used a disposable filter on the gun. It takes out any water that may be in the tank or line. I have a regulator with a water separator on it but I still use the extra filter. A few extra drops of water being removed will help you. I use PPG paint for my projects.
