Well, I'm almost embarrassed to post this question but......AS they say the only stupid question.......etc,,etc,, Anyway, Not sure where to start with timing on my 390 running an M.S.D. ready to run dist.(no brain box), R.V. Cam and I don't have the emmissions sticker anymore. Also can't remember if pinging is too much advance or not enough. Any thoughts on optimum setting? Please help with my brainfreeze THANX!

Pinging is to much advance. What I would do is set your timing to TDC the advance it by ear till is runs the smoothest. Then put a timing light on it and back it off a couple degrees.
I'm running a PerTronix all electronic distributor in my 75 FE (it's a 416") I am running 12° initial with the vacuum disconnected and about 36° total advance all in by 3500 rpm. I do run the vacuum, just disconnected during setting. Seems to run very good right there.

" if its a stock iron-headed fe u can run as much as 38 to 40 "at 3200rpm . if the ignition is a hot one u can increass the plug gap and run less total timing for more power and efficient. if it is heavy or high geared ofcours less timing.
