for some reason i messed with the timing on my truck and ever since it hasn't ran as good. 76 f250, 390, rv cam, mildly built. Any idea about where my timing should be set. Lately it has been getting hot (220) around town and climbing hills where it never used to.
Well this is a deep subject. I have read many different theorys on where to time an FE. I believe that the book for my 1970 F250 states 6* of initial timing (with Vac advance off and plugged). Well that may be fine for a stock engine, mine does not perform as "strong" as it can here. I have a mild built engine and have my timing at 15* initial. Just has more "Pep" there.
Most folks agree to have around 15* initial, and ~35* total all in by 2500RPM. I would suggest that you try a few different settings and use what works best.
Now, if you really want to start an argument, post a question about where your Vac advance line should be from: Manifold or metered Carb. port. The jury is still out!
