Ive got a 65 f100 that came with manual steering. want to convert to power steering. tried to find a donor truck and am just not having any luck.
found all the parts from a 1976 f150 except a pitman arm. my 1965 arm is to small to fit on the 1976 power steering gear box. the only 1976 pitman arms i can find have a ball joint made onto the other end of it whereas the 1965 doesnt.
1965 has 1 hole at each end. 1 for the gear bowith splines) and 1 for a ball joint to go into.
1976 has a splined hole at 1 end for the power gear box and the other end has a ball joint made onto it.
tried a 1979 pitman arm(holes at each end) and it fit the gear box but it is "clocked" differently and wouldnt line up correctly.
im using a custom steering column(ididit) and rag joint so im good there. all i need is the correct pitman arm.
Ask FTE member jowilker, he's the expert on these P/S swaps. I haven't a clue which Pitman Arm to use.
All I can tell you is this: D2TZ-3590-B .. Pitman Arm-Use with Ford/Saginaw integral P/S / Marked: D2TA-3590-BA
Applications: 1972 F100/250 2WD from serial number M00,001 // 1973/79 F100/150 2WD Regular & Super Cab // 1973/79 F250 2WD Regular & Super Cab under 8,100 lbs. GVWR
When you make the swap, you need to use all the steering linkage from the donor vehicle, i.e. the center link, tie rods, pitman arm, everything. Don't try to mix and match the early and later model parts. It will be easier that way.

Whoa there, Nelly!
Ford never made a pitman arm for F-100, F-150 or F-250 2WD from '65 - '79 (and some time later) with a ball joint in it - they all have 2 holes. You don't have the right part to begin with, and doesn't sound like a Ford part, either.
Was the donor truck a 4x4 perhaps? If so, you need to get all 2WD parts, the 4WD won't fit.

what the heck part do i need?
The '79 will work, if it is indeed from a '79 F-100- F-250 2WD(except as indicated by Mr. Numbers above). As for the clocking, did you center the power steering gear before determining the pitman arm was not clocked correctly?

Thanks Mr. Wilson, but like you I don't have a clue. I have found & bought a complete donor for every upgrade that I have been involved with. No mix & match allowed in my barn.
Way tooo many problems eliminated by doing it that way.
