65 2WD Power Steering Conversion

I am nearly done accumulating parts for my conversion to power steering on my 65 F250, 2WD, 352, 4-speed manual. Before I start I want some advice on how to install the pitman arm into the steering linkage. I need to know if I need special tools or abilities. Looks intimidating to me. I have a power steering gear that came with a pitman arm. Do I use that arm or my existing arm off the manual gear? If I use the new gear how do I break and reinstall the ball joint? If I use my existing manual gear pitman arm, how do I pull the pitman arm off the manual gear?

To pull a pitman arm you need a pitman arm puller!! You should be able to buy/rent one at most auto stores. The arm is splined and will go on 4 different ways(90° apart). Just match the direction with your manual gear. I have the same setup as you and used the arm that was one the gear I got from a '77.

You will find it best to use the pitman arm on the new PS box. Some of them do not interchange from year to year or type to type where they mount on the box.
Fortunately, they all mount the same to the steering linkage.
This only applies to F-250 and below.

Thank you for the advice on the pitman arm. It really helps. Now to really show my ignorance - How do I get the ball joint apart? Then, how do I get it back together?? I've never done a thing with ball joints or steering linkage. Never even lined up a front end. Can't afford to have a professional do this job for me, recently lost my job do to the six surgeries on my back. And, because of my bad back, I really need power steering in my pickup! HELP!

It looks like a steak fork for bbq but much beafier rentable at any parts store I'm sure. Slide the fork in between the adjoining links and whack it on the end with a hammer. Try google for info if you need..

Remanbob is right, it is called a "pickle" with the correct term being "tie rod separator."
