this may seem strange but im looking to find what all id need to hook up to get the idi to start while on a stand / hoist. wiring is my nemesis and i am terrible at it...
basically what im trying do do is start it up to check the timing...the ip gear was moved so just making sure i have it on the right tooth.
i have 2 7.3 motors with various parts missing from each...combined what i have and am selling the complete one on monday...just want to make sure everything is good (timing)
i was thinking just to hook up the battery and starter/flywheel, rig up a fuel tank and just start it with ether. id need power to the IP and this is where i start to lose it....
anyone know what all id need to hook up to it to make it run shortly?
thanks!
here are some pics (just because)
one that i have torn down, one that i just got as is, the two, and so far
Do you have the alternater and belt on it? Im pretty sure if you had that on there and hooked up a starter and two batterys you could possibly start it by useing a push start with the two alligator clips to clip on to the positive and negitive lines on the starter. If you could at least get it to crank it should turn over and run. I would think. Im not for sure tho. My only consurn is how to shut it off before you run it dry i wouldnt want you to burn up your IP... I would asume it would die if you unhooked the batterys since the alternater wouldnt keep turning but diesel run on conpression so idk about that one. Ill ask around and try and find out. Maybe someone will have a for sure awnser on here.
You need enough battery to turn the engine over fast enough, 1 wire to the fuel shut off on the injection pump and a fuel line from the lift pump dropped into a container of diesel.
It will shut off by unhooking either the batteries, pull the wire to the fuel shut off or cut off the air supply.

would jumper cables to the starter from my truck work?
and it has the exhaust manifolds on, i think it will be pretty loud anyways...might be video worthy! lol

Do you mean take the starter off your truck, put it on the engine, and use jumper cables from a battery to the starter?
I don't think jumper cables are thick enough to handle the current needed to start these trucks. Thats why the battery cable to the starter is so big, and why it typically takes 2 good batteries to get these running.
Make sure to check the oil before you try it! Depending on how long you need it on for, you may want to run a hose stuffed into one of the coolant hoses.
Yea I was thinking the jumper from my batteries to the motors starter...I have a pretty heavy duty jumper cables illl look and find specs on it. Lol I'll check oil boy would that be embarrassing! Good idea to run the hose
