Bought a 2008 F350 4X4 diesel with automatic and in the process of changing filters. On the transmission I have an external filter and thought that there must be a cartridge inside? Been told its a sealed unit and $100+ for new one. Is this correct? Second question - is there also an internal filter? Thanks
who told you it was a sealed unit, it may be empty or it may have a cartridge in it that is definitely replaceable, Ford changed the internal trans filter in 2008 to a better filter, different pan also, and eliminated the external filter, but I have seen several early 2008's with the external filter housing sometimes with a filter in it and sometimes no element, and others from slightly later production without the external filter at all. If you check the forums for the 2008 filter upgrade you should find pictures showing the differences in the filters, if you have the early style gravel catching screen you do need the external filter or you can upgrade to the new style pan and internal filter and forget about doing anything with the external filter as it only is a bypass and will not affect anything even if it plugs.
