2008 F250, 5.4L - Just noticed a tremendous amount of noise that initially sounded like lifters knocking. Lifted the truck and i believe the catalytic converter is rattling up a storm. Just trying to confirm! I have just under 70K miles so maybe Ford will fix?
Its possible the converter could have been bad. Ford had a bad batch of converters around that year. (mostly a little newer MYs) It could also be a loose heat shield. The stock exhaust have a bunch of heat shielding on them. You should be able to hear if the catalyst is loose inside one of the cats if you tap on it pretty good with a hammer. There is an emissions warrenty that last longer than the drivetrain warrenty in some states I believe.
Not sure if it’s the same but just had my cat changed at the dealer with only 36k. I have a V10 and the check engine light came on, had it checked at the dealer and it was the cat. They changed it under warranty. Apparently there is a six year warranty on the cat, well for the V10 anyways.

Ford house told me based on my GVW (9400), the warranty is only good for 5yr or 50K miles (F250). GVW of 8300 is 8 /80. They charged me $47.50 for nothing. They dropped the charge from 95 to 47.50 when I complained. I told them first thing that if the warranty is no good, i dont want them to do anything.
Cost to fix at the ford house was quoted around $1500. Local muffler shop supposedly can do for about 1/3. Unfortunately in the small town i live and the fact that it is christmas, I either have to drive to Ft. Worth or wait for the local shop to reopen on the 3rd of Jan.
I will be driving a noisy truck during vacation week which they say is ok.
any chance you can get a audio/video of the noise ???
curious to hear it.. im trying to trackdown drivetrain noise in my SD, but it will only do it under certain circumstances and those happen to be while driving so i can never get close to it..
I can try. It sounds like lifters rattling continously on first start up on an old engine. It also could be miscontrued that i have diesel rattling when it is a gas engine. It is noticable on mind. Even the guys in the shop heard it before they opened garage door.
It happened on my 2008 F350 V10 sounded exactly like what you said. Sounded like an old diesel engine when it started up once it warmed up the noise stopped (the broken pieces of cat would get hot and expand enough to stop rattling.
I have to thank you. I took your code to the ford house and they said it was valid. I just picked up my truck today fixed at no charge. they even reimbursed the initial shop charge.
I am so glad I posted here. I hope everyone reads this post and gets that code you gave!!!
THe Ford house apologized saying that their computer should have shown that code. Do you believe that? I don't!
