I have a guy wanting to trade me his 1997 F-250 ext cab 4x4 for my 2001 F-150 Supercrew Lariat 4x4. My truck has the 5.4 with 192k miles on the truck but motor has been replaced before I got it, no clue how many miles are on it. My truck runs good and has no problems. Here is what he posted 1997 powerstroke 4x4 with a built automatic tranny and 188,xxx miles has no dents and very small rust.. Has all fluids changed and a new turbo has huge air intake and straight pipe exhaust and brand new tires never had a ball in the bed or been chipped the truck gets about 18-20 mpg,has a bed off another truck on it,because other bed rusted out. He is asking $7000 should I trade? He wont throw in any cash also.
With 188K on it, the value on his truck is around $6-7K imo. Your truck is about the same IMO if not less. So, if you want a diesel, then jump on it. Check for fuel leaks in the valley and ask to see receipts for the work to the tranny and other stuff.
I'd find out who "built" the tranny and get a look at the huge air intake and new turbo. Sure doesn't sound like a truck that has never been chipped. Sounds more like a guy who is trying to remember what the previous owner told him he had done to it.
Here is what he posted 1997 powerstroke 4x4 with a built (built or rebuilt) automatic tranny and 188,xxx miles has no dents and very small rust(how small).. Has all fluids changed and a new turbo (why) has huge air intake (what type) and straight pipe exhaust and brand new tires never had a ball in the bed or been chipped the truck gets about 18-20 mpg (prove it) ,has a bed off another truck on it,because other bed rusted out (REALLY, link to small rust above). He is asking $7000 should I trade? He wont throw in any cash also.
My gut feeling here is look very close at what you might be doing. Also you need to figure out why the owner want's something else.
I bought a truck from a guy in the same kinda situation, and now im having to invest in good bit of repairs. So if it seems fishy in the begining then I would consider going a different route.
Yeah be careful, but that sounds like a deal weighted in your favor slightly if the truck is solid.
FWIW, I traded my '99 F-150 Ext Cab, flare side, 4x4, auto with a 5.4 and less than 100k miles on it for my truck. I was not in need of a nice looking truck, I just wanted something that would haul a ton (quite literally) since I burn about 6 chords of firewood a year, and I wanted something that would seat 5 and tow our camper at the same time. The old truck would do all that, but not as well as this one does. Plus this one gets better fuel economy, and it's a PSD. I wasn't planning on the truck being my daily driver, and had I known it would become that, I may have kept my other truck, but I really like the PSD and I love this truck too. This is easily twice the truck that the other one was.
I found out more info on him lastnite. He said he has only had the truck 2 months and he buys and sells trucks, that kinda scares me cause he is just going by what the previous owner had told him. Im looking for a truck to haul the family when needed (5 of us) and needs to be able to pull and haul. I own a farm and am getting ready to start buying feeder calves so it will be a work truck/daily driver, and I live 15 miles from town so it will see 30+ miles everyday. Im thinking Ill keep looking around for a different truck.
If he is in the business and seems like a reputable kind of guy, see if he will offer you a warranty of some kind. I am a bit skewed in my judgement on these kinds of things, because around here that truck in good shape will be worth about $8,000 (if it isn't rotted out). That is certainly more than an F-150 is worth, and while you may have to put a little into it, you'll likely have to do that to whatever truck you get used.
If you're afraid that the guy may not be on the up and up with you and that the truck may have been run hard in the past, take the tools to pull the emergency brake pedal assembly (it's just three nuts - 12mm I believe) and see if the rubber cap is still in the back of the PCM. The chances are pretty slim that it has had a chip in it if the rubber plug is still there. I don't see too many guys keeping the plug and then re-installing it after he pulled the chip.
If you decide to go look at it, let us know and we will send you a list of things to look for/at.
I can understand being a little leery given the circumstances.
He wont offer any warranty, said he just does this on the side to mke a lil extra money. He seems real excited to trade for my truck. It would be roughly an hour drive to check it out and thats with him meeting half way. Been on so many wild goose chases for trucks lately Im not sure I wanna waste my time but also dont wanna miss out on a good truck.
Do you have pictures of it to even see what you're getting into? Post them up here if you do so we can give you our input. It will probably make a lot of difference how well the truck was maintained and whether it has been run hard.
Yeah, I can't see it. I can't open CL at work.... And I agree that the fact that he is so excited for the prospect of the trade is a little unsettling...
