The motor is out and at the shop- but the question is once i get it back, what's the best way to get it back in? Motor and tranny separate, or just putting it in with the transmission bolted on?
Anyone have a preferred method?
By the way, the motor is a 390 and the tranny is a 4 spd, in a 2wd truck.
Bell housing & clutch install while hanging on the hoist is easier IMO ... The trans too .. Either way , flicking the trans in later is also no big deal ...
My personal preference is to assemble as much as possible outside of the truck - it is MUCH easier to do when you have easy & ready access to all the parts & components.
Get a load balancer, this will allow you to easily tilt the assembly during installation.
Its a bit easier to an extent as an assembly , if you have the truck high enough & can get past the cross member . A helper will make it quite a bit easier ,,,
Installing the trans after the clutch has been properly aligned is a 10 minute job for one person...

Perhaps to somebody who does it for a living.
For the rest of us, a transmission jack is a big help as everything needs to be aligned just right for the input shaft to mate with the pilot bearing and everything to slip into place.

Aligning the clutch while standing up is fairly easy ...After that the trans is easy ...
Sounds like the one piece method is the better one. I'll probably have to drop out a few crossmembers, but, that's alright.
I have to admit, I'm starting to misshaving my rig running! Grumpy hasn't been running for the last month or so. And there's still quite a bit to do! I need to drop the gas tank, clean it out, finish painting under the hood, etc etc.
By the way, what the best way to clean a gas tank? Or should I just bite the bullet and buy a new one?
