I just purchase my first Ford truck and Diesel 2 weeks ago. I have a '00 F350 Crew, 8' bed. After starting my truck, approx. 10-15 seconds, there is a sudden "thump" that you can both hear and feel. Any ideas as to what this could be?
To expand upon what "gseeders" wrote, it only happens on the diesel trucks because they have a electric operated vacuum pump to supply the heating/air conditioning vent system and the vacuum hubs. I have not heard this in any gasser as the motor developes its own vacuum. I don't know what door in the plenunm box is moving to cause this. Bottom line: normal operation, although sometimes catches you off guard.
I too have the same "thump" just after starting. Although it dosen't happen every time I start it and sometimes its louder than others, It's seems to be normal. I posted this question here myself last year, and received similar responses. I took it to Ford, and of coarse it would'nt do it while they had possesion and they could'nt tell me anything. Now after two years of hearing it and it seems to have no ill affect, I no longer worry about it.
I too have heard this "thump' in my truck as well. The first time , it scared the hell out of me , thinking someone either hit my truck , or something fell outta it.
Huh? I've never heard that noise. It sounds pretty dramatic from what I am reading. So, I think if I ever heard (or felt) the thump, I'd know about it.
PSD Tech, I drive a 2002 F-250 with a 5.4 and it does this. We have 3 of these super duty trucks at work, all gassers and all do it, so I think it is the design more than where the vacuum comes from.
Mmmm, interesting. I've only noticed it on the diesels, and have not had any customers give that complaint on their gassers. I'm not saying that you are wrong. I'll try and pay more attention to it.
????
I got another one for ya. On all of our E450 buses they "do not" do this. Only my 01 does this. I think this has been covered in the past and it is possibly related to the 4X4 system.
edit: forgot to mention they are all the psd's exept for one 98 which is a v10.
I have the 2001 psd and it is not a 4x4 and has done this from day one although it doesn't happen every time. I first wonder if I hit something or vise versa. I now have 65,000 mi without any repairs. knock on wood!!
Just to give an update the 2003 7.3 still does the muffled backfire sounding thump, no driveability issues though. I was glad to see this post, thats why I came to this site, to see if I could find out what that damn noise was. First time I heard it I thought someone opened thier door into the side of my new truck and was ready to kick some butt, but when I looked around I was all alone as usual
My 2002 V10 Excursion does this sometimes. Just a suttle hint of a thump is all I hear just after starting the engine in the early morning. Now that I know what it is, not worried about it.
