Starting issue please help
This will probably get moved to the 7.3 forum down the page a little but a lot of your questions can be answered in the above link.
Short answer is that after 2 mins off key on time the glow plugs will go off. Oil plays a large factor in how well it cranks over too when super cold. A lot of folks runs a thinner weight oil in the winter for that reason. Check to make sure your GPR is working as it should. Check voltage on both big terminals immediately after turning key on. It helps to have a helper. There are 2 Reasons i say to check it even though it is new. A lot of the relays are cheaply made and die quickly and also there are some instances of the PCM not energizing the relay. If both big terminals have power when key is on, then all is well. If not, then one small wire should have power with the key on and the other should ground when the glow plugs are energized. The pcm grounds the relay. So, if u put the meter on both small ones, you should read battery voltage if the truck is signalling the relay to come on.
There should be a procedure in that link on how to check the resistance of the glow plugs. Its not that hard and is the only real way to know what u have going on with them. SHould u need them, there is a few links here as well that can walk you through replacing them. The most important thing to remember is to use MOTORCRAFT glow plugs. Some of the other brands have been known to swell and break off popping a hole in the piston.
I am not sure what u mean about not staying as warm when plugged in. When it gets super cold here, I plug mine in. It usually just barely climbs into the normal range of the temp hand. Thats after about 5 hrs. I work late nights and my wife is on a traditional schedule so she will usually plug it in when she leaves.
two other things often overlooked. Starter amp draw plays a large part on how well it starts when cold. If its pulling too many amps, it will not crank well, especially when cold. Usually, a lot of the auto parts places can check that for free.
These trucks also like bright shiny clean cables. Even if u you do not see corrosion, oxidation by itself will cause it to start not so efficiently. Taking a good battery brush to the battery terminals and the starter lugs will help one crank a lot better in the cold if its been a while since its been done.
