im looking at picking up this explorer. all it needs is a headgasket. im not sure which engine it had, nor am i sure what the options were. but how hard would it be to do a headgasket? i have a thousand cash in my pocket. could i pull it off?
If I were you I would pass on it. A head gasket can be a big job and often times you run into other issues like a cracked head or block/piston issues which will end up costing you more than a grand.
I once bought a Bronco II with a blown head gasket because it was super clean minus the engine problem. I picked up a good used engine for $400 bucks & installed it myself. I would rather do an engine swap vs a head gasket.
It really depends on what you are looking at. The 4.0 SOHC engine can have three or four timing chains requiring special tools and often changed designs mid year.
If it's the old 4.0L OHV motor your best off ordering a new set of heads. Lots of problems with those heads cracking. I bought a set off ebay for 415 shipped, gasket set was 80, and new bolts were 35.

4.0 SOHC has always had 3 chains. The passenger side chain tensioner service requires engine removal, so I assume pulling the head and getting it back on would require the same. No sense not changing the tensioner if you are in that deep.
OHV, have at it if the rest of the vehicle is sound. Note A4LD transmissions can be trouble, but then what isn't trouble after a while..
I would agree, I would pass unless I already had another complete motor that was in good condition. No point in buying such a vehicle as its only going to be a project. If you wanted a project, it had better be some type of sports car or one of a kind.
